About Me

Welcome to Find Your Voice -- Customized College Counseling. My name is Karen Elitzky and I have been the Director of College Counseling at La Jolla Country Day School in San Diego, The Ramaz School in New York City, and The Drew School in San Francisco. I received my Bachelor of Arts from Amherst College in Political Science and Psychology and my Masters of Arts in Educational Psychology from New York University. After beginning my teaching career at The Canterbury School in Connecticut, I moved to San Francisco where I continued to teach and took on a new role as Director of College Counseling. 25 years later, I still find great joy in helping students navigate every step of the college application and admissions process. I place a great emphasis on getting to know my students, helping them find the right fit, and of course, essay writing. I love to help students find their voice, and to create a narrative that makes the essays dance off the page. It is so rewarding to hear admissions representatives tell me how much they loved a student’s essays, how they were able to hear the student's voice, and that their writing was what made the difference. Don’t let this process scare you, let me help you find YOUR voice.

Find Your Fit

Are you a freshman and beginning to think about how to shape your high school experience, academically and extracurricularly?

Are you beginning your college search and need help creating your list?

Are you trying to decide which standardized test to take, when to take it, and how to prepare?

Does the thought of writing college essays scare you, or do you just need help getting started?

I have over 20 years experience helping students through EVERY step of the process and can help you, wherever you are.

Find your Voice

From the moment I stepped out of the classroom, and began working with students through the college application process, essay writing quickly became my favorite part. College essay writing takes time and care. No two students approach it in the same way, and that is what makes my job so much fun. I will meet you where you are in the process, help you find your voice, and allow admissions representatives to get to know YOU, beyond your numbers and your resume. We brainstorm, we edit and we revise... as many times as it takes. I am a mother of two and have worked in high schools for most of my adult life. I know how busy you are and don't want to add one more scheduled meeting to your day. You write when you write -- some of our best ideas come just as we are falling asleep, so always keep a note pad and pen by your bed! No matter how many drafts, one thing will alway remain: YOUR VOICE. Welcome to Find Your Voice -- I can't wait to help you find yours.

"Karen is great at all of the admissions-related tasks, but her secret sauce, is essay writing. Karen, who is a genuinely curious, people-person, gets to know her teenage clients at a level that few adults are able to reach. And because she understands how important it is for applicants to "show" – not "tell" – the prospective colleges and universities who they are, she is able to keep the focus on creating a written narrative that somehow winds up feeling visual in nature. Given the large number of applications that admissions representatives have to wade through, this skill makes Karen's clients stand out from the crowd."

"Working with Karen Elitzky was the best decision I ever made when applying to colleges. Karen really understood what I was looking for academically and professionally and I ending up attending my top choice school - USC's School of Cinematic Arts. Karen helped my craft my voice in my college essays and guided me through high school academic career to make sure I was taking the right classes that stimulated me and my collegiate interests. Karen is the best choice for assistance in the college application process!"

"Karen is amazing! She encouraged me to think harder about what I was writing, and pushed me to create my best writing. Most importantly, Karen helped my voice shine through in my essays. She was wonderful to work with, and she always got edits back to me quickly. Her comments and suggestions were very intelligent and got me to really think about what message I was conveying in my writing. I wish I could go through the college application process again just to work with Karen a second time!!"

"When I think of Karen, I think of a passionate, kind, and determined person. My high school career, just like those of my peers, often got very hectic. Between playing competitive tennis, managing a tough academic schedule, and creating time for extracurriculars, I often found it difficult to schedule the time necessary to write flawless and impactful college application essays. However, Karen made the writing process painless, and her helpful and reassuring guidance gave me the confidence to succeed. She supported me from the very beginning of the process, when I needed help brainstorming topics and ideas, which can surprisingly be the most challenging part of applying, to making sure I dotted my i's and crossed my t's. Her dedication, wisdom, and expertise proved invaluable in securing my acceptance to Stanford University, and I recommend her wholeheartedly to anyone interested in perfecting their college application experience!"

"Karen is the most outstanding college counselor. I've met with many and she brings great integrity to her work. She's great with college-bound kids (and their parents). We feel so fortunate that Karen guided us through the process."

"Both of my children were accepted at their first-choice college. And that is impressive, but not just because of the low acceptance rates at those schools. It is impressive because these schools were the best "fit" for each child. Karen's years of experience combined with her breadth of knowledge, enable her to be an excellent resource when it comes to providing insight into what specific colleges and universities have to offer/are looking for in an applicant. Fit comes first. And Karen gets that."

"My daughter has a distinct voice in her writing that I didn't want to lose and Karen allows the student to preserve that. Karen worked with my daughter over the phone and via Google docs and it was great. Alyssa loved working with Karen and she provided great guidance. I didn't even see the essays until my daughter submitted and they were terrific and so, Alyssa. My daughter is going to PENN's M&T program and we're so thrilled. I highly recommend if you're looking for someone who connects with high school kids, is inspiring and can provide direction, Karen is the one! Thank you Karen!"

"Both of my children were fortunate enough to have Karen guiding them, from the time they first starting thinking about what opportunities might exist beyond high school, until the moment they hit "submit" on the online applications. From start to finish, working with her, for all of us, was nothing short of a joy."

"There is no glossing over this fact: college admissions has become a stressful process. It's stressful for the young adult who is at the center of it and also for his or her parents. The great news is that Karen Elitzky has dedicated her professional life to helping families navigate this process."

"Karen was a key contributor on our son’s path to college... starting with recommending that he consider Yale, which hadn’t been top of mind for him. But she knew our son and his ability, so encouraged him to learn more about the university. After visiting it, he knew why she made the recommendation and he decided to include it as an option. Karen was a great help, working closely with him on his college applications and essays. Her guidance was instrumental in helping him polish his submissions. He is now enjoying his first year at Yale University!"
